The Brisbane Breakers and Melbourne Flames have everything to play for when they meet in the final round of AUL 2019.

Sydney has already booked its grand final spot and three teams – Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth – are fighting it out for the last place in the decider in round five.

Here, we have contrasting tales of fortune (and misfortune).

Brisbane were one of the pre-season favourites but shocked everyone by losing their first two matches. Two dominant wins followed that which steadied the ship, but victory is still required here for a chance to go all the way.

Melbourne have swung the other way, going undefeated in 2018 to win the AUL title and then winning their first two matches of the 2019 season.

But two straight losses have their season in freefall and only a win here – with other results going their way – will give them a chance to defend their championship.

How this match impacts the finals

If Perth Power beats Adelaide 3-0, this match effectively becomes meaningless.

Perth will be through and both Brisbane and Melbourne will be eliminated.

However, if Perth wins 2-1 then the Breakers can reach the grand final with a 3-0 win over Melbourne, although the Flames will be eliminated.

If Adelaide beat Perth by any margin, the Brisbane v Melbourne match becomes sudden death with the winner taking the grand final berth.
